Falls Prevention Awareness Week is September 21–25, 2026 (National Council on Aging). This week, we invite you to take a fresh look at the familiar spaces and routines that make home your own.
Start with one manageable change, and ask someone you trust to help. Explore the practical tips below, ask us for our room-by-room checklist, or talk with us about a free, non-medical home-safety visit.
Ask about a free home-safety visit. Call (512) 551-1274.
No pressure. No obligation. Visits are by appointment and subject to availability. A walkthrough is not a medical evaluation or a guarantee against falls.
The favorite chair by the window. The familiar route to the kitchen. The small routines that make the day feel like your own. Home safety should support those comforts, not take them away.
At Friday Home Care, we bring a practical, personal approach to fall-prevention support. Our caregivers, whom we call “Fridays,” look for household concerns, support agreed daily routines, and communicate observations so families can decide what to do next.
We start with a conversation: What matters to you? Where would a little help make the day easier? The goal is to work together, respecting the person, their preferences, and the place they call home.
You do not have to tackle everything at once. Choose a manageable starting point, and ask for help with moving furniture, repairs, or installations.
· Walking paths: Keep shoes, clutter, and cords out of walkways; remove throw rugs or secure them with nonslip backing (CDC home-safety checklist).
· Bedroom and nighttime lighting: Keep a lamp within easy reach of the bed and use nightlights along the route to the bathroom (CDC home-safety checklist).
· Bathroom: Use a nonslip tub or shower surface and arrange for grab bars where support is needed near the tub and toilet (CDC home-safety checklist).
· Kitchen and storage: Keep frequently used items within easy reach, about waist height; never use a chair as a step stool (CDC home-safety checklist).
· Stairs, steps, and outdoor access: Keep steps clear, arrange repairs for loose or uneven steps, and check for adequate lighting and secure handrails on both sides of stairs (CDC home-safety checklist).
A Friday Home Care walkthrough helps identify concerns and practical next steps. It does not replace an individualized equipment assessment, a professional installation, or needed repairs.
Home safety is not just about rugs and lighting. Tell a healthcare provider promptly if you or someone you love has fallen, feels unsteady, or is worried about falling (CDC guidance for family caregivers).
Some questions need a licensed professional’s attention:
· Medicines, dizziness, or sleepiness: Ask a physician or pharmacist to review medicines, including over-the-counter products and supplements, and discuss any concerns (CDC caregiver guidance).
· Vision, feet, and footwear: Keep up with eye examinations and discuss foot concerns and suitable footwear with a healthcare provider (CDC caregiver guidance).
· Strength, balance, and exercise: Ask a healthcare provider which exercise program is appropriate rather than choosing a routine based only on general advice (CDC caregiver guidance).
Our caregivers observe and communicate concerns; they do not diagnose why someone is falling, determine whether a medicine is causing symptoms, or change medicines. Questions about walking-aid fit, equipment selection, or rehabilitation belong with an appropriately qualified professional.
A little help can be as personal as having someone nearby while you get ready for the day or helping keep the route to a favorite chair clear. We discuss the support that fits the individual rather than assuming everyone needs the same thing.
Depending on the agreed care plan, staff training, and scheduled services, that support may include:
· Personal routines: Assistance with bathing, dressing, and other daily activities, with attention to dignity and individual needs.
· Household details: Helping keep commonly used areas orderly and everyday items within reach.
· Meals and drinks: Support with meal preparation and access to drinks, consistent with the person’s care plan and any clinician-directed restrictions.
· Agreed reminders: Reminders for daily routines, including medication reminders when appropriate to the care plan, without changing doses or schedules.
· Communication: Sharing observed concerns with the appropriate agency contact and, as authorized, family members or healthcare professionals.
We assess whether requested assistance is appropriate before including it in the care plan. Some needs require licensed clinical care or a different level of support, and we will discuss those boundaries honestly.
Before starting care with a new family, we offer a free, non-medical home-safety walkthrough. A Friday Home Care leader sits down with you, listens to your concerns, and looks through the home with you or your family member.
The visit includes:
· A written list: Specific household hazards or concerns observed during the walkthrough.
· Practical next steps: Simple changes to consider and items that need further attention.
· Questions for the right professional: Concerns to discuss with a clinician, equipment specialist, or qualified installer, when appropriate.
· An honest conversation: Whether ongoing non-medical care might help, or whether other steps may be a better fit.
No pressure. No obligation to begin care. The walkthrough is not a clinical fall-risk evaluation, a home inspection, or a certification that a home is safe.
You do not need to wait until you have every answer before starting a conversation. Choose one concern, identify someone who can help, and decide when to follow up.
Ask us for our “A Safer Home, Room by Room” checklist to help organize that first step. You can also explore the CDC’s home-safety checklist for additional room-by-room guidance.

Tell us a little about the help you are looking for, and we will discuss the next step with you. Please call rather than sending medical records, medication lists, or other sensitive personal information to our general email address.
Friday Home Care provides non-medical home care and personal assistance, not skilled nursing, physical therapy, or medical treatment. Services and visits depend on assessed needs, staff availability, and the agreed care plan; no service or safety measure can guarantee that a fall will not occur.
